Two Tools, Two Different Jobs
Almost every UK removals company now offers both: a 60-second online form and a more detailed home or video survey. They are useful for different stages of planning — and getting the wrong one at the wrong time costs money. Here is how to decide.
What an Instant Online Quote Actually Gives You
You fill in a form: postcodes, number of bedrooms, maybe a tick-box list. A price appears within minutes. The good bits:
- Fast — useful when you are shortlisting companies
- No commitment — no calls, no follow-up if you do not want it
- Easy to compare at a glance
The catch is that the price is based on averages, not your actual home. The form does not know about your home gym, your three-piece suite with detachable arms, or the fact that your road has a permit-only parking zone.
For most UK movers, the online price is within 15 to 25 per cent of the final figure — sometimes higher, sometimes lower. If you book purely on that, you may get an "additional charges on the day" conversation you were not expecting.
When an Online Quote Is Genuinely Fine
It works well when:
- You have a small move (studio or 1-bed)
- You are moving locally (under 20 miles)
- Access is straightforward at both ends
- You are doing all your own packing
- You just need a ballpark to budget
For a young professional moving from one rented flat to another, an online quote is often accurate enough to book on. Just ask for a fixed (not "from") price in writing.
What a Home or Video Survey Adds
A surveyor — in person or over a video call — walks through every room with you. They note:
- Actual furniture inventory
- Large or awkward items
- Loft, garage and shed contents
- Access issues at the property
- Dismantling needs (fitted wardrobes, beds, dining tables)
They will also ask about the destination — parking, lift access, floor levels.
The output is a fixed-price quote that genuinely should not change on the day, assuming nothing major changes in scope.
Video Survey vs In-Person: How Different Are They?
Video surveys (over WhatsApp, FaceTime or a custom app) became standard during the pandemic and are now mainstream. For most 1 to 3 bed moves, they are as accurate as in-person.
When to insist on in person:
- 4 plus bedroom homes
- Properties with outbuildings, garages or workshops
- Older properties with awkward access or narrow staircases
- High-value contents needing a detailed inventory
- If you are not confident on camera (lots of people are not)
When video is fine:
- 1 to 3 bedroom moves
- Standard semis, terraces, modern flats
- You are comfortable showing rooms on camera
- Tight schedules — surveys can be booked same week, sometimes same day
What This Means for Accuracy
| Method | Typical accuracy |
|---|---|
| Online form | ±15 to 25% |
| Video survey | ±5 to 10% |
| In-person survey | ±0 to 5% (essentially fixed) |
For a £1,000 move, that is the difference between budgeting £1,000 and being asked for £1,250 on the day. Worth a 20-minute video call.
The Smart Way to Do It
Most people get the best result from this order:
- Use our free calculator to get a benchmark cost in 60 seconds.
- Get 3 online quotes to shortlist companies and a budget range.
- Book a video or home survey with your top 1 to 2.
- Compare the surveyed quotes properly — they are like-for-like.
- Book the one that fits, with everything written down.
That gets you both speed and accuracy.
Red Flags Either Way
Whichever route you take, watch for:
- "From £X" prices (means the real price will be higher)
- Quotes that do not list inclusions
- Pressure to pay a large deposit immediately
- Verbal-only quotes
- No company address or registration number
Reputable UK movers are members of the British Association of Removers (BAR) or accredited by trade bodies. Worth checking — see our guide on how to find a good removals company for the full vetting process.
