The short answer

Among UK removal companies with more than 1,000 Trustpilot reviews, Holdem Removals had the highest rating: 5.0/5 from 1,873 reviews when checked on 28 August 2026. The most-reviewed household remover was Pickfords, rated 4.8/5 from 12,862 reviews on the same date.

Those two facts answer different questions. The first tells you which company has never really put a foot wrong; the second tells you which has been tested at a scale nobody else on this list approaches. Neither is "the best removal company in the UK", and any page claiming a single winner is not reading its own data carefully.

How we ranked them, and why not to copy Trustpilot

Trustpilot's own category page sorts by "Most relevant", a proprietary order that is not a quality ranking. The company shown first is not therefore the UK's best remover. We publish our criteria instead so the order below can be reproduced by anyone:

  1. The company must actually perform household removals. Couriers, house-clearance firms and quote platforms are classified separately - see below. This single step changes the list more than any other.
  2. A minimum of 200 Trustpilot reviews to appear at all. Below that, a rating is too easily moved by a handful of reviews.
  3. Evidence band before rating. Companies are grouped by review volume first - Large (1,000+), Established (500+), Qualifying (200+) - and only then sorted by rating within the band.
  4. Rating, then review count as the tie-breakers inside each band.
  5. UK service coverage is recorded so a strong regional firm is not mistaken for a national one.

Step 3 is the important one. It is what stops a 5.0 from 220 reviews being presented as better than a 4.9 from 4,732. We have not invented a proprietary score, because a score whose formula is hidden is no more auditable than Trustpilot's own sort - the rule above is the whole method.

These figures are one signal, not proof of service quality. They measure the experience of customers who chose to leave a review, which is not the same as every customer.

Why review count changes what a rating means

A 5.0 built on 1,500 reviews and a 5.0 built on 20 reviews are not comparable claims. The first describes a company that has moved well over a thousand households without a serious public failure. The second could be twenty friendly jobs in a good month.

Rough statistics make the point: with 20 reviews, a single one-star review drops a perfect score to roughly 4.8. With 1,500, one bad move barely registers. High-volume ratings are harder to earn and harder to lose - which is why the ranking above puts evidence band ahead of the decimal.

The corollary matters too: a 4.8 from thousands of reviews is a stronger signal than a 5.0 from a few hundred, and the companies at the top of the "Large" band have both.

A special note on Britannia

Britannia is not one company, and there is deliberately no single "Britannia score" on this page.

Britannia Movers International was founded in 1981 as a cooperative and describes itself as a group of independently owned member businesses, each holding an equal shareholding in the group. Members trade under their own legal names and their own domains - Britannia Movers - East operates as Alan Cook Removals, Britannia Bearsbys from bearsbys.com, Britannia Leatherbarrows from leatherbarrows.co.uk.

Each has its own management, crews, fleet, pricing, local processes and Trustpilot profile. Averaging them into one figure would invent a number that describes no business you can actually book. Britannia members therefore appear individually in the ranking above, on their own records, exactly like any other independent firm.

The practical consequence for you: a five-star Britannia member in Kent tells you nothing about the Britannia branch quoting for your move in Yorkshire. Check the member, not the brand. Our Britannia vs Pickfords comparison sets out what to verify.

Marketplaces and comparison platforms

These are useful, and for some moves they are the right answer - but they do not own vans or employ crews, so their Trustpilot scores measure the platform rather than the remover who arrives. Ranking them beside removal companies would compare two different things.

Platform Model What it actually is
AnyVan Marketplace Matches your job to drivers with spare capacity on routes they are already running. Cheapest for single items, studios and one-bed moves. MovingCost.co.uk is an affiliate partner of AnyVan.
Shiply Marketplace A reverse-auction marketplace where transport providers bid for your job. Similar economics to AnyVan, with the same caveats on insurance limits and crew certainty.
Compare My Move Lead generation Passes your details to up to six removal companies, which then quote you directly. You are choosing the remover, not the platform.
reallymoving Lead generation Quote-comparison service covering removals alongside conveyancing and surveying.
Getamover Lead generation Comparison service aimed specifically at full household removal jobs rather than single-item transport. MovingCost.co.uk is an affiliate partner of Getamover.

Use a marketplace when price is the priority and the load is small. Use a removal company when you need a guaranteed crew, packing, storage or higher insurance limits. Our comparison of AnyVan against a traditional removal company covers where the line falls.

Listed on Trustpilot, but not household removers

Trustpilot's removals category mixes business models. These appeared alongside genuine removal companies and are excluded from the ranking, with reasons stated so the decision is auditable:

Company Trustpilot Reviews Why it is not in the ranking
Proovia Couriers 4.8 59,903 A courier and single-item delivery business rather than a household removal company. Its 59,903 reviews would top any list sorted by volume, which is precisely why business model has to be classified before ranking.
houseclearance4u.com 5.0 439 A house-clearance and waste-removal service, not a household removal company - it empties properties rather than moving people between them.
Kanguro 4.9 1,252 A Poland-based international mover specialising in UK-Europe routes rather than UK domestic removals. Ranked separately as an international specialist.

Are large national removal companies actually better?

Not automatically. Scale buys some things and costs others.

National brands Member networks Independents Marketplaces
Accountability One organisation, end to end The member firm, not the brand The owner, often directly Platform mediates; driver performs
Local knowledge Varies by branch Usually strong Usually strongest None
Fleet capacity Large Varies by member Limited Pooled, not dedicated
International Established agent networks Available via the network Rare without a partner Limited
Storage Own facilities Member depots Varies Third party
Consistency Highest Varies between members Depends on the firm Lowest
Price Usually highest Mid Often lowest for local moves Lowest for small loads
Flexibility Lowest Mid Highest Date-dependent

The honest summary: for a straightforward local move, a well-reviewed independent frequently beats a national brand on both price and attention, and you are not paying for infrastructure you will not use. For a long-distance move, one needing storage, or anything crossing a border, the national operators and network members have capability an independent usually cannot match. Bigger is better for complex jobs, not for all jobs.

Trustpilot is not enough

A rating is a starting point. Before you book any remover on this page or off it, check:

  1. Companies House - the company exists, is active, and the name on the quote matches the name on the register.
  2. Goods in Transit insurance - the cover limit, and whether self-packed boxes are excluded.
  3. Public Liability insurance - and the amount.
  4. A written quotation, not a verbal figure.
  5. VAT status - whether the price quoted includes it.
  6. Whether the quote is fixed or an estimate that can move on the day.
  7. Cancellation terms, and the notice at which charges begin.
  8. Waiting-time charges - from when, and at what hourly rate.
  9. Whether any part is subcontracted, including storage and any international leg.
  10. Who physically performs the move - employed crews or another company.
  11. BAR membership where claimed, verified on the BAR register rather than from a logo. BAR members carry the Advance Payment Guarantee and fall under the Furniture and Home Improvement Ombudsman.
  12. Google reviews as well as Trustpilot - different platforms attract different complaints.
  13. Recent complaint patterns - read the one- and two-star reviews from the last six months, not the lifetime average.

Editorial independence

The ranking is computed from Trustpilot rating and review count using the published rule above, and nothing else. Commercial relationships do not affect position, and every one we hold with a listed business is disclosed beside that entry.

Disclosed relationships on this page: we have a content relationship with Holdem Removals and use its anonymised completed-job records as the basis for our moving cost index; we are an affiliate partner of AnyVan and Getamover. We hold no commercial relationship with any other company or platform named here.

Anyone can reproduce this ranking: open each linked Trustpilot profile, apply the five criteria, and you should arrive at the same order.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which UK removal company has the best Trustpilot rating?+

Among UK removal companies with more than 1,000 Trustpilot reviews, Holdem Removals had the highest rating when checked on 28 August 2026: 5.0 out of 5 from 1,873 reviews. Several smaller firms also hold 5.0 ratings from fewer reviews, which is weaker evidence - a perfect score from 200 reviews is easier to achieve than from 1,800.

Which UK removal company has the most Trustpilot reviews?+

Pickfords, with 12,862 reviews at a rating of 4.8 out of 5 when checked on 28 August 2026. Proovia has far more reviews (59,903) but is a courier rather than a household removal company, so it is excluded from this ranking.

Is a 5.0 rating better than a 4.9?+

Not necessarily. A 5.0 from 220 reviews is weaker evidence than a 4.9 from 4,732, because the larger sample is much harder to earn and much harder to fake. Our ranking groups companies by review volume first and only then sorts by rating, so a small perfect score cannot outrank a large near-perfect one.

Are independent removal companies better than national brands?+

For straightforward local moves, a well-reviewed independent often beats a national brand on price and attention, and you avoid paying for infrastructure you will not use. For long-distance moves, moves needing storage, or international relocations, national operators and network members have capability most independents cannot match. Bigger is better for complex jobs, not for all jobs.

Why is Britannia not ranked as one company?+

Britannia Movers International is a cooperative of independently owned member businesses, each with its own management, crews, fleet, pricing and Trustpilot profile. Averaging their scores would produce a figure describing no business you can actually book, so members are ranked individually on their own records.
