How Much Does a Man and Van Cost?

A man and van is one of the most popular ways to move in the UK — especially for smaller moves, single items, or tight budgets. But prices vary widely depending on what you need, how far you're going, and when you book.

Average Man and Van Prices 2026

Job Type Typical Cost
Single item (local) £30 – £80
Studio / 1-bed flat (local) £150 – £300
2-bed flat (local) £250 – £450
3-bed house (local) £350 – £600
Long distance (100+ miles) £400 – £900+

These prices typically include one driver who also helps load and unload. For larger moves, you may need two men and a van, which adds roughly £15–£25 per hour.

What Affects the Price?

Distance is the biggest factor. A local move under 10 miles costs significantly less than a cross-country trip. Most operators charge a flat rate for local jobs and a mileage rate for longer distances.

Volume of items determines whether you need a small van (e.g. a Transit) or a larger Luton van. A Luton van costs more per hour but may save a second trip.

Time of day and week matters too. Weekend and evening bookings often carry a premium of 10-20%. Mid-week is cheapest.

Access difficulty — flights of stairs, narrow doorways, and long carry distances all add time and therefore cost.

Packing is rarely included. If you need packing help, expect to pay £20–£40+ per hour extra.

Man and Van vs Removal Company

A man and van is typically 30-50% cheaper than a full removal company for smaller moves. But there are trade-offs:

Man and Van Removal Company
Cost Lower Higher
Insurance Basic or none Goods-in-transit cover
Packing service Usually no Often included
Multiple staff 1-2 people 2-4 people
Best for Studios, 1-2 bed, single items 3+ bed houses, fragile/valuable items

How to Find a Cheap Man and Van

  1. Compare at least 3 quotes — prices vary hugely between operators
  2. Book mid-week — Tuesday to Thursday is cheapest
  3. Be flexible on time — morning slots are most popular and often pricier
  4. Declutter first — fewer items = smaller van = lower cost
  5. Pack everything yourself — have boxes sealed and ready to go
  6. Check reviews — the cheapest quote isn't always the best value

Red Flags to Avoid

  • No insurance at all (even basic public liability)
  • Cash-only, no receipt
  • No written confirmation of price
  • Unbranded or unregistered vehicle
  • Refusing to give a fixed or capped price upfront

When to Use a Man and Van

A man and van makes sense when:

  • You're moving a studio, 1-bed, or 2-bed flat
  • You have a few large items (sofa, bed, wardrobe)
  • You're on a tight budget
  • You can pack and prepare everything yourself
  • The move is local (under 30 miles)

For larger properties or long-distance moves, a full removal company is usually better value once you factor in time, insurance, and manpower.
