Moving from the UK to New Zealand

New Zealand is the furthest a British household can move, and the shipping bill reflects it: containers take three months and biosecurity inspection is as strict as Australia's. It is also the one long-haul destination where two of the usual rules reverse — New Zealand drives on the left and runs on 230V, so your car and your appliances both work when they arrive.

This guide covers what a UK to New Zealand household move costs door to door, how long it takes, the customs concession that makes it duty-free, and the MPI biosecurity rules that decide whether your container clears in days or weeks.

How Much Does It Cost to Move from the UK to New Zealand?

International removals are priced on cubic metres. New Zealand sits at the expensive end of every long-haul table because of distance, port charges and a smaller shipping market than Australia's.

Home size Typical volume Shared container (groupage) Sole-use container
Studio / 1-bed 10 – 20 m³ £2,800 – £5,000
2-bed 20 – 32 m³ £4,500 – £7,000 £6,000 – £9,000 (20ft)
3-bed 32 – 50 m³ £6,500 – £9,500 £8,000 – £12,000 (20ft / 40ft)
4+ bed 50 – 65 m³ £10,000 – £15,000 (40ft)

Indicative 2026 door-to-door figures from a UK mainland address to Auckland, including export packing, sea freight, New Zealand customs clearance, MPI inspection and delivery to room. Wellington and Christchurch are typically £300–£800 more; smaller South Island towns and rural addresses add delivery mileage and sometimes a domestic ferry crossing.

A 20ft container holds around 28–33 m³, a well-packed two- or three-bedroom home. A 40ft holds around 60–67 m³. Below roughly 25 m³, sharing a container is almost always cheaper.

What the Price Should Include

Always confirm the quote is door to door and includes:

  • Export packing in the UK — international moves are packed by the crew, so the mover carries the insurance liability
  • Sea freight and UK port charges
  • New Zealand port and terminal charges, billed in NZD
  • Customs clearance and the broker's fee
  • MPI biosecurity inspection: the Ministry for Primary Industries inspects household effects and charges for the inspector's time — budget NZD $300–$600 for a shared consignment and more for a full container
  • Delivery to room at your new address

Budget separately for marine insurance (2.5–3.5% of declared value), storage at either end, any biosecurity treatment ordered by the inspector (cleaning or fumigating a single item can run NZD $200–$500), and duty and GST on anything that does not qualify for the household effects concession.

How Long Does Shipping to New Zealand Take?

Service Port to port Door to door
Sole-use container (FCL) 7 – 9 weeks 9 – 12 weeks
Shared container (LCL / groupage) 9 – 11 weeks 11 – 14 weeks
Air freight (small consignments) 4 – 8 days 1 – 3 weeks

Most services route via Australia or Singapore with at least one transhipment, which is where the extra weeks come from. Add time around Christmas, when Australasian ports are congested, and a few days if your shipment is selected for a full physical MPI inspection rather than a document check.

Customs: The Household Effects Concession

Household goods and personal effects enter New Zealand free of duty and GST under the customs concession for first-time immigrants and returning residents, provided:

  • You hold a visa or permit allowing you to stay in New Zealand for at least 12 months, or are a New Zealand citizen or resident returning after 21 months or more abroad
  • You have personally owned and used the goods before departure — they are not new, and not for sale or commercial use
  • You import them within a reasonable time of your arrival

You complete an Unaccompanied Personal Baggage Declaration (NZCS 218), normally through your mover's New Zealand agent, with a detailed inventory. Clearance usually takes place after you have arrived, so time the container to land after you do. New goods, items still in retail packaging, and anything you have not used are dutiable — keep receipts and declare them.

Biosecurity: What Not to Pack

New Zealand's economy depends on keeping pests out, and MPI inspects household shipments accordingly. The inspector is looking for soil, seeds, plant and animal material, and anything that could harbour insects. Common problems:

  • Garden tools, boots, bikes, golf clubs and outdoor furniture with any trace of soil — clean to showroom standard
  • Camping gear, tents and fishing equipment, which almost always attract inspection
  • Vacuum cleaners with contents inside — empty and clean them
  • Untreated wood, bark, pine cones, dried flowers and Christmas decorations containing them
  • Cane, wicker, bamboo and rattan items, frequently ordered for treatment
  • Food of any kind, including dried herbs, honey and pet food
  • Feathers, shells, coral and animal products

Declaring an item honestly is never penalised; failing to declare it is. A shipment that fails inspection waits while the offending item is treated or destroyed at your cost.

Cars: The One Route Where It Can Make Sense

New Zealand drives on the left, so a UK car is the right way round — which makes this the only long-haul destination where shipping a vehicle is worth doing the sums on. A car you have owned and used for at least a year, imported under the same concession as your household goods, can enter free of duty and GST. It still has to pass entry certification, meet New Zealand emissions and safety standards (which most UK cars of recent years do), and be registered and warranted locally.

Shipping a car in your own 40ft container alongside your furniture typically adds £1,500–£3,000 including compliance and registration. For a car worth more than about £10,000 that you would otherwise sell and replace, that is often cheaper than buying the equivalent in New Zealand, where used cars are expensive. For an older or low-value car, sell in the UK.

Pets and Electrical Goods

Pets from the UK need a microchip, rabies vaccination, a rabies antibody test, an import permit and a minimum 10 days in post-arrival quarantine. Book quarantine space months ahead; it fills quickly.

Electrical goods run on 230V / 50Hz, the same as the UK. Your appliances, kitchen equipment and white goods all work — you only need plug adapters or a change of plug. Whether shipping a washing machine is worth £100–£200 in container space is a separate question, but unlike Australia's neighbours across the Pacific, it will at least switch on.

Saving Money on This Route

  • Take less. New Zealand is the most expensive route per cubic metre from the UK, so every box of low-value heavy items costs real money.
  • Share a container under 25 m³. The saving is usually thousands of pounds for a few extra weeks.
  • Do the car sums honestly — it makes sense for a good car you would otherwise replace, not for one you would otherwise scrap.
  • Clean everything before the packers arrive. A biosecurity treatment order costs more than most items are worth.
  • Get three like-for-like quotes. Movers use different shipping lines and New Zealand agents, and prices vary by 30–40% for identical inventories.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to move from the UK to New Zealand?+

Roughly £2,800–£5,000 for a 1-bed in a shared container, £6,000–£9,000 for a sole-use 20ft container suiting a 2–3 bed home, and £10,000–£15,000 for a 40ft container. Figures are door to door to Auckland; Wellington, Christchurch and rural addresses cost more.

How long does shipping household goods to New Zealand take?+

A sole-use container takes 9–12 weeks door to door and a shared container 11–14 weeks. Most services tranship via Australia or Singapore, which is where the extra weeks come from. Air freight for a few essential boxes takes 1–3 weeks.

Do I pay duty or GST on my furniture in New Zealand?+

Not if you qualify for the household effects concession: you hold a visa allowing a stay of at least 12 months (or are a returning resident after 21+ months abroad), you personally owned and used the goods before departure, and you import them within a reasonable time of arriving. New or unused items are dutiable.

What is the MPI biosecurity inspection fee?+

Budget NZD $300–$600 for the inspection of a shared consignment and more for a full container. Any treatment the inspector orders — cleaning or fumigating individual items — is charged on top, typically NZD $200–$500 per item.

What can I not take to New Zealand in my shipment?+

Food of any kind, untreated wood, bark and pine cones, dried flowers, and anything carrying soil or plant material. Garden tools, bikes, boots, camping gear and outdoor furniture must be spotlessly clean, and cane or wicker items are often ordered for treatment.

Is it worth shipping my car to New Zealand?+

Sometimes — it is the one long-haul destination where it can be. New Zealand drives on the left and a car owned and used for at least a year can enter duty- and GST-free, though it must pass entry certification. Shipping and compliance add roughly £1,500–£3,000, which can beat buying an equivalent car locally if yours is worth more than about £10,000.

Will my UK electrical appliances work in New Zealand?+

Yes. New Zealand runs on 230V/50Hz, the same as the UK, so appliances and white goods all work with a plug adapter or a change of plug.

Is there quarantine for pets moving from the UK to New Zealand?+

Yes. Cats and dogs need a microchip, rabies vaccination, a rabies antibody test and an import permit, and spend a minimum of 10 days in post-arrival quarantine. Book quarantine space months in advance.
