Frequently Asked Questions

What fees should I budget for when moving house in the UK?+

Typical UK moving fees include the removal company (£400–£1,500), solicitor/conveyancing (£850–£1,500), survey (£400–£700), stamp duty (varies by price band), mortgage arrangement fee (£0–£2,000), EPC (£60–£120), deposit, packing materials (£50–£150), end-of-tenancy or move-out cleaning (£100–£250) and Royal Mail redirection (from £35). Use the fees checklist below to plan your full budget.

When should I book a removal company?+

Book your removal company 6–8 weeks before moving day. Peak slots (June–September, end-of-month, Fridays and Saturdays) often sell out 8–12 weeks ahead. If your dates are flexible, midweek and mid-month moves in winter are typically 15–25% cheaper.

Is there a printable version of this moving house checklist?+

Yes — use the "Print this checklist" button at the top of this page to print or save it as a PDF. The print layout hides the site navigation and ads so you get a clean, paper-friendly document you can tick off room by room.

How early should I start packing?+

Start packing low-priority items (loft, spare bedroom, garage, books, ornaments) 5–6 weeks before moving day. Aim to have everything except a small "essentials box" packed by the day before the move.

What should be in my moving day essentials box?+

Pack a clearly-labelled essentials box with: kettle, mugs, tea/coffee, toilet roll, hand soap, phone chargers, basic tools (screwdriver, scissors, tape), a change of clothes per person, medication, important documents, snacks and a first-aid kit. Keep it with you in the car — not in the removal van.
