Moving to the UK from Australia

Shipping a home from Australia to the UK costs roughly £2,500–£4,500 for a 1-bed in a shared container and £5,500–£14,000 for a sole-use 20ft or 40ft container, door to door, and takes eight to fourteen weeks. Because the goods arrive from outside the EU, they would attract both import VAT and customs duty without relief, which makes HMRC's Transfer of Residence (ToR1) approval the most valuable piece of paper in the move.

What It Costs

International moves are priced on volume and on whether you share a container or fill your own. The bands below are the ranges this site uses for the UK to Australia route on the same shipping lanes; inbound quotes normally fall in a similar range, with UK port charges, clearance fees and UK delivery access deciding where.

Home size Typical volume Shared container Sole-use container
Studio / 1-bed 10 – 20 m³ £2,500 – £4,500 —
2-bed 20 – 32 m³ £4,000 – £6,500 £5,500 – £8,500 (20ft)
3-bed 32 – 50 m³ £6,000 – £9,000 £7,500 – £11,000 (20ft / 40ft)
4+ bed 50 – 65 m³ — £9,000 – £14,000 (40ft)

A 20ft container holds around 28–33 m³ and a 40ft around 60–67 m³. Below roughly 25 m³, sharing is almost always cheaper; above 40 m³ a sole-use 40ft usually works out cheaper per cubic metre.

Confirm every quote is door to door and includes export packing in Australia, sea freight, UK port and terminal charges, UK customs clearance and the agent's fee, and delivery to room. Budget separately for marine insurance (typically 2.5–3.5% of declared value) and any storage at either end.

How Long It Takes

Service Door to door
Sole-use container 8 – 12 weeks
Shared container 10 – 14 weeks
Air freight (a few boxes) 1 – 3 weeks

Most people send essentials by air and everything else by sea, and time the container to land after they have arrived and have a UK address.

Customs: Why ToR1 Matters More on This Route

Goods from Australia are an import from outside the EU. Without relief they attract import VAT and customs duty. Transfer of Residence relief removes both on personal belongings if you have lived outside the UK for at least 12 consecutive months, have had the goods for at least six months before you move, are making the UK your normal home, import them within 12 months of moving, and keep them for 12 months after.

Apply online with the ToR1 form before the container ships. HMRC issue a unique reference number that your UK agent quotes on the import declaration (customs procedure code 40 00 C01). HMRC do not publish a processing time; with an eight-to-fourteen-week sea transit you have time, but only if you start before the packers arrive rather than after.

The ToR1 guide covers the documents and the item list. For HMRC the list is grouped by type with quantities — values and brands are not needed — which is a different document from the valued inventory your mover will prepare for marine insurance. Keep both.

Australian documents to keep

HMRC want proof of your Australian address within the last 6 months: a bank statement, utility bill or lease. Keep them before you close accounts. For the UK side you need proof of address within the last 3 months; if you do not have one yet, a statement from the person you will stay with plus their proof of address, or a hotel booking, is accepted.

Pets, Vehicles and Appliances

Pets. Dogs, cats and ferrets from Australia need a microchip, a valid rabies vaccination and an animal health certificate; dogs also need tapeworm treatment 1–5 days before arrival. There is no UK quarantine for animals meeting the rules. Book the flight well ahead; pet freight capacity on this route is limited.

Cars. An Australian car can come in under ToR relief if listed on the ToR1. You must notify HMRC through NOVA within 14 days of arrival and register it with the DVLA. Australian cars are right-hand drive, which helps, but a vehicle not built to UK/European approval can need an approval test and modifications. Get the cost before shipping; for an ordinary car it rarely makes sense.

Appliances. Australia and the UK both use 230 V / 50 Hz, so your appliances work; only the plug changes.

Arriving in the UK

Australia is on the UK's designated-country list, so an Australian licence can be exchanged for a UK licence without a test (you can drive on it for up to 12 months first). Apply for a National Insurance number if you will work, register with a GP and the local council, and open a UK bank account — a tenancy agreement is the proof of address most banks and HMRC accept. Returning Britons should check when UK tax residence restarts under the Statutory Residence Test.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to ship household goods from Australia to the UK?+

Sea freight is priced on cubic metres and container type. Expect a similar range to the outbound route: roughly £2,500–£4,500 for a 1-bed in a shared container, £5,500–£8,500 for a sole-use 20ft container suiting a 2–3 bed home, and £9,000–£14,000 for a 40ft container, door to door. Confirm UK port charges, customs clearance and delivery to room are included.

How long does shipping from Australia to the UK take?+

A sole-use container typically takes 8–12 weeks door to door and a shared container 10–14 weeks, because the mover waits to fill it. Air freight for a few boxes of essentials takes 1–3 weeks.

Do I pay UK import VAT and duty on goods from Australia?+

Not if HMRC approve Transfer of Residence relief before the container arrives. Goods from outside the EU would otherwise attract both import VAT and customs duty, so the ToR1 application matters more on this route than on a European move. Apply before the container ships.

Can I use my Australian driving licence in the UK?+

You can drive on it for up to 12 months after becoming resident. Australia is a designated country, so the licence can be exchanged for a UK licence without taking a test.

Will my Australian appliances work in the UK?+

Yes. Australia and the UK both use 230 V / 50 Hz, so appliances work with a plug adapter or a UK plug fitted. Only the plug shape differs (Type I in Australia, Type G in the UK).
