Moving to the UK from the USA

Shipping a home from the USA to the UK costs roughly £2,200–£4,200 for a 1-bed in a shared container and £4,800–£13,500 for a sole-use 20ft or 40ft container from the East Coast, door to door, with West Coast origins adding £1,000–£2,500. Goods arriving from the US would attract both import VAT and customs duty without relief, so HMRC's Transfer of Residence (ToR1) approval is the document that decides what the move really costs.

For the general UK-side picture see Moving to the UK from abroad.

What It Costs

International removals are priced on cubic metres, on container type, and on this route on which coast the container leaves from. The bands below are the ranges this site uses for the UK to USA route on the same shipping lanes; inbound quotes normally fall in a similar range.

Home size Typical volume Shared container Sole-use container (East Coast)
Studio / 1-bed 10 – 20 m³ £2,200 – £4,200 —
2-bed 20 – 32 m³ £3,500 – £6,000 £4,800 – £8,000 (20ft)
3-bed 32 – 50 m³ £5,500 – £8,500 £6,500 – £10,500 (20ft / 40ft)
4+ bed 50 – 65 m³ — £8,000 – £13,500 (40ft)

West Coast origins (California, Washington, Oregon) typically cost £1,000–£2,500 more for a full container, because the box either transits the Panama Canal or is railed to an East Coast port. Texas and the Gulf sit between the two; inland origins add haulage to the nearest port.

Confirm every quote is door to door: export packing in the US, sea freight and US port charges, UK terminal handling, UK customs clearance and the agent's fee, and delivery to room. Budget separately for marine insurance (2.5–3.5% of declared value) and any storage.

How Long It Takes

From Sole-use container Shared container
East Coast 4 – 7 weeks door to door 6 – 10 weeks
Gulf / Texas 5 – 8 weeks 7 – 11 weeks
West Coast 7 – 10 weeks 9 – 13 weeks
Inland (Chicago, Denver) 6 – 9 weeks 8 – 12 weeks

Air freight for a few boxes of essentials arrives in one to two weeks and is priced by weight.

Customs: ToR1 Before the Container Ships

Goods from the USA are an import from outside the EU and would attract import VAT and customs duty. Transfer of Residence relief removes both on personal belongings if you have lived outside the UK for at least 12 consecutive months, have had the goods for at least six months before you move, are making the UK your normal home, import them within 12 months of moving, and keep them for 12 months after.

Apply online with the ToR1 form before the container ships. HMRC issue a unique reference number that your UK customs agent quotes on the import declaration (customs procedure code 40 00 C01). HMRC do not publish a processing time, so start the application when the move is firm, not when the container is on the water.

The ToR1 guide covers the documents and item list. HMRC's list is grouped by type with quantities and does not need values or brands; your mover's valued inventory for marine insurance is a separate document.

US documents to keep

HMRC want proof of your US address within the last 6 months — a bank statement, utility bill or lease — so keep them before closing accounts. For the UK side you need proof of address within the last 3 months; if you have none yet, a statement from the person you will stay with plus their proof of address, or a hotel booking, is accepted.

Pets, Cars and Appliances

Pets. Dogs, cats and ferrets from the USA need a microchip, a valid rabies vaccination and an animal health certificate; dogs also need tapeworm treatment 1–5 days before arrival. There is no UK quarantine for animals meeting the rules. Pets normally fly as manifest cargo into the UK rather than in the cabin.

Cars. A US car can come in under ToR relief if listed on the ToR1, and you must notify HMRC through NOVA within 14 days of arrival and register with the DVLA. A left-hand-drive, US-specification car will generally need an Individual Vehicle Approval test and modifications to lighting before it can be registered. For an ordinary car the cost rarely makes sense; sell it in the US.

Appliances. The UK is 230 V / 50 Hz. US 120 V / 60 Hz appliances with motors or heating elements will not work properly; sell the white goods and small kitchen appliances. Laptops, phones and most TVs are dual voltage and only need a plug adapter.

Arriving in the UK

The USA is not on the UK's designated-country list, so a US licence cannot be exchanged: you can drive on it for up to 12 months after becoming resident, and in that time you need a provisional licence and to pass the UK theory and practical tests. Apply for a National Insurance number if you will work, register with a GP and the local council, and open a UK bank account with your tenancy agreement as proof of address. US citizens remain US tax filers abroad; take advice on both sides' residence rules.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to ship household goods from the USA to the UK?+

Sea freight is priced on cubic metres and container type. From the East Coast expect a similar range to the outbound route: roughly £2,200–£4,200 for a 1-bed in a shared container, £4,800–£8,000 for a sole-use 20ft container and £8,000–£13,500 for a 40ft, door to door. West Coast origins typically add £1,000–£2,500 for a full container.

How long does shipping from the USA to the UK take?+

From the East Coast a sole-use container typically takes 4–7 weeks door to door and a shared container 6–10 weeks. From the West Coast allow 7–10 weeks sole use or 9–13 weeks shared. The Atlantic crossing itself is only 8–14 days; the rest is port time, customs and waiting for a shared container to fill.

Do I pay UK import VAT and duty on goods from the USA?+

Not if HMRC approve Transfer of Residence relief before the container arrives. Goods from the USA would otherwise attract both import VAT and customs duty. Apply online with the ToR1 form before the container ships.

Can I exchange my US driving licence for a UK one?+

No. The USA is not on the UK’s designated-country list, so a US licence cannot be exchanged. You can drive on it for up to 12 months after becoming resident, and in that time you need to apply for a provisional licence and pass the UK theory and practical tests.

Will my American appliances work in the UK?+

Mostly not. The UK uses 230 V / 50 Hz against 120 V / 60 Hz in the US. Anything with a motor or heating element — kitchen appliances, hair dryers, washers, dryers — will not work properly or at all. Laptops, phones and most TVs are dual voltage and only need a plug adapter.
