Moving from London to Amsterdam
Amsterdam is a fast, popular route for UK movers - a short crossing and a direct run through Belgium or via the Hook of Holland ferry. The catch is access: narrow canal houses with steep stairs and hoist beams are part of the city's charm and its moving challenge.
How Much Does It Cost to Move from London to Amsterdam?
| Home size | Shared load | Dedicated vehicle |
|---|---|---|
| Studio / 1-bed | £1,200 – £2,700 | £2,200 – £3,800 |
| 2-bed | £1,800 – £3,300 | £2,900 – £4,800 |
| 3-bed | £3,000 – £5,500 | £4,500 – £7,400 |
| 4+ bed | £4,500 – £8,000 | £6,400 – £10,500 |
Prices include packing, the crossing, transport and delivery. Canal-house deliveries that need an external hoist add cost.
What affects the price
- Volume in cubic metres.
- Canal-house access - steep, narrow stairs mean furniture is often hoisted through a window using the gable beam or a ladder lift.
- Shared vs dedicated transport.
- Timing - summer and month-end are busiest.
How Long Does It Take?
| Service | Typical transit |
|---|---|
| Dedicated vehicle | 1 – 3 days |
| Shared / part load | 1 – 2 weeks |
Customs & Paperwork After Brexit
An Amsterdam move is an EU import: valued inventory, proof of address and residence proof. Used goods owned 6+ months are usually duty- and VAT-free under transfer of residence. You will need a BSN (citizen service number), obtained by registering at the gemeente. Full detail in our Moving from the UK to the Netherlands guide.

The Route and the Crossing
London to Amsterdam is around 350 miles. Removers use either the Channel Tunnel and a drive up through Belgium, or an overnight North Sea ferry from Harwich to Hook of Holland. The ferry suits full loads well because the driver rests during the crossing and arrives ready to deliver.
Either way, a dedicated vehicle typically delivers within one to two days.
Amsterdam Access: Hoists and Canals
Amsterdam is the clearest example in Europe of access defining the cost of a move.
- The stairs genuinely will not work. Amsterdam's canal houses have exceptionally steep, narrow staircases. Furniture of any size cannot go up them.
- Hoisting is standard. Buildings have a hook at the gable specifically so goods can be lifted in through the window. An external lift or a rope hoist is the normal method, not a last resort, and it must be arranged in advance.
- Measure your windows, not just your stairs. Items still have to fit through the window frame. A large corner sofa may not, whatever the hoist can lift.
- Canal-side parking is tight. Vehicles may need a permit and there is often very little room to work.
Saving Money on This Route
Because the corridor is short and busy, groupage to Amsterdam moves faster than almost anywhere else in Europe — a same-week shared load is realistic. If your volume is small and your dates are even slightly flexible, this is usually the best-value option available on any European route.
