Moving from London to Rome
Rome combines history, culture and Mediterranean lifestyle. It is one of the longer western-European road moves - through France and northern Italy down to Lazio - so transit and cost are higher than Paris or Amsterdam.
How Much Does It Cost to Move from London to Rome?
| Home size | Shared load | Dedicated vehicle |
|---|---|---|
| Studio / 1-bed | £1,600 – £3,200 | £2,700 – £4,600 |
| 2-bed | £2,300 – £4,200 | £3,500 – £5,900 |
| 3-bed | £3,800 – £6,900 | £5,300 – £8,900 |
| 4+ bed | £5,300 – £9,500 | £7,300 – £12,500 |
Prices include packing, transport and delivery. Rome's historic centre - narrow streets, ZTL traffic-limited zones and walk-up flats - can add access charges.
What affects the price
- Volume in cubic metres.
- Access - ZTL permits, narrow lanes and no-lift buildings in the centro storico.
- Shared vs dedicated transport.
- Timing - summer (and August closures) affect scheduling.
How Long Does It Take?
| Service | Typical transit |
|---|---|
| Dedicated vehicle | 4 – 7 days |
| Shared / part load | 2 – 4 weeks |
Customs & Paperwork After Brexit
A Rome move is an EU import: valued inventory, proof of address and residence proof. Used goods owned 6+ months are usually duty- and VAT-free under transfer of residence. You will need a codice fiscale (Italian tax code) for customs and admin. Full detail in our Moving from the UK to Italy guide.

The Route and the Crossing
London to Rome is roughly 1,100 miles, via the Channel Tunnel or a Dover ferry, then through France and over the Alps — usually the Fréjus or Mont Blanc tunnel, both of which carry heavy-vehicle tolls. A dedicated vehicle typically takes three to five days.
Rome Access: the ZTL Is the Main Issue
Rome's historic centre operates one of Europe's strictest restricted-traffic systems, and it is the defining constraint on a Rome removal.
- ZTL zones. The zona a traffico limitato covers most of the historic centre and is camera-enforced. A removal lorry cannot simply drive in — access needs a permit arranged in advance with the comune, often valid only for specified hours.
- Time windows. Permits frequently restrict deliveries to early morning. This affects crew scheduling and therefore cost.
- Narrow streets and courtyards. Even with a permit, many central streets cannot take a full-size vehicle, so a shuttle is common.
- Older buildings. Small lifts and tight stairwells are typical; external lifts are frequently needed.
If a remover quoting for a central Rome address has not asked about ZTL access, they have probably not delivered there before. A vehicle turned away at a ZTL camera is an expensive failed delivery.
Saving Money on This Route
Resolve access before you book, not after. On Rome addresses, the difference between a smooth delivery and a failed one is almost always paperwork rather than distance. Also avoid August, when much of Italy closes for Ferragosto and removal availability is at its worst.
