Moving from the UK to Spain

Spain remains one of the top destinations for Britons moving abroad, with established communities along the Costa del Sol, Costa Blanca and in cities such as Barcelona, Madrid and Valencia. It is a road move through France, so cost and timing depend heavily on how far south you are heading.

How Much Does It Cost to Move from the UK to Spain?

Home size Shared load Dedicated vehicle
Studio / 1-bed £1,400 – £2,900 £2,400 – £4,200
2-bed £2,000 – £3,800 £3,200 – £5,400
3-bed £3,500 – £6,500 £5,000 – £8,500
4+ bed £5,000 – £9,000 £7,000 – £12,000

Quotes include packing, transport through France and delivery in Spain. Southern Spain (Andalucía, Costa del Sol) costs more than the north simply because of the extra distance.

What affects the price

  • Distance — Barcelona and the north are closer than Málaga, Marbella or the Canary Islands (which need sea freight).
  • Volume — measured in cubic metres; the biggest lever on price.
  • Access — gated urbanizaciones, apartment blocks and narrow old-town streets can add shuttle costs.
  • Islands — the Balearics and Canaries add ferry or container shipping.

How Long Does It Take?

Service Typical transit
Dedicated vehicle 3 – 6 days
Shared / part load 1 – 3 weeks
Canary Islands (sea) 2 – 5 weeks

Customs & Paperwork After Brexit

A UK–Spain move is now an EU import:

  • Detailed inventory — a valued list, usually in Spanish.
  • Customs declaration — handled by your remover.
  • Duty/VAT relief — used household goods can normally be imported free of import tax when you transfer your residence, provided you can prove you are taking up residence and have owned the goods for at least 6 months.
  • NIE number — the foreigner's tax/ID number, needed for almost everything in Spain, including customs.

Visas & Residency

After Brexit, UK nationals staying beyond 90 days need a visa. Common routes are the non-lucrative visa (for those with sufficient income/savings who will not work locally) and the digital nomad visa (for remote workers). After arrival you obtain the TIE residency card and register on the local padrón at the town hall. Verify current requirements on GOV.UK and Spanish consulate websites.

  • Costa del Sol — Málaga, Marbella, Estepona.
  • Costa Blanca — Alicante, Torrevieja, Jávea.
  • Barcelona & Madrid — work and city living.
  • Balearic & Canary Islands — sea freight required.

The Moving Process Step by Step

  1. Book a video survey and get 3 itemised quotes.
  2. Apply for your NIE and visa early — they can take weeks.
  3. Prepare a valued inventory for customs.
  4. Declutter, then pack (DIY or professional).
  5. Collection and sealing in the UK.
  6. Road transport through France into Spain.
  7. Delivery, with unpacking if booked.

How to Save Money

  • Sell heavy or low-value furniture and rebuy in Spain.
  • Travel off-peak — summer is the busiest and dearest season.
  • Choose a groupage / shared load if you can be flexible on dates.
  • Get quotes from movers that run regular Spain routes to share backloads.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to move from the UK to Spain?+

Expect roughly £1,400–£4,200 for a 1-bed and £3,500–£8,500 for a 3-bed home, depending on volume, how far south you are going and shared vs dedicated transport. Island moves (Balearics, Canaries) cost more because they need sea freight.

Do I need an NIE to move to Spain?+

Yes. The NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) is the foreigner ID/tax number required for customs clearance, opening a bank account, buying property and most official processes. Apply as early as possible, as appointments can be limited.

How long does a move from the UK to Spain take?+

A dedicated vehicle typically delivers in 3–6 days; a shared load takes 1–3 weeks. Moves to the Canary Islands go by sea and can take 2–5 weeks.

Can I import my furniture to Spain without paying tax?+

Used household goods can usually be imported free of import duty and VAT when you transfer your residence, provided you prove you are taking up residence in Spain and have owned the items for at least 6 months. A detailed valued inventory is required.
