Moving to the UK from Spain

A household move from Spain to the UK costs roughly £1,400–£4,200 for a 1-bed and £3,500–£8,500 for a 3-bed, priced on volume and travelling by road through France. The removal is the straightforward part. The paperwork that decides whether you pay import VAT on your own furniture is HMRC's Transfer of Residence relief, and it has to be approved before the lorry reaches the UK.

This guide covers what the move costs, how long it takes, and how to line up the Spanish and UK paperwork so the customs declaration clears first time. For the general UK-side picture see Moving to the UK from abroad.

What It Costs

Spain to UK moves use the same corridor as the reverse direction, so the price bands are the same; what changes is which end has the difficult access.

Home size Shared load Dedicated vehicle
Studio / 1-bed £1,400 – £2,900 £2,400 – £4,200
2-bed £2,000 – £3,800 £3,200 – £5,400
3-bed £3,500 – £6,500 £5,000 – £8,500
4+ bed £5,000 – £9,000 £7,000 – £12,000

Bands reflect the UK–Spain corridor as priced on this site; inbound quotes normally fall in the same range. Southern Spain and the Costas sit higher than the north because of the extra distance to the French border; the Balearics and Canaries need a sea leg on top.

Price drivers:

  • Volume. A 3-bed household is typically 35–55 m³, and everything is per cubic metre.
  • Shared or dedicated. Groupage can halve the cost if your dates are flexible. Many Spanish-based international removers run regular UK consolidation runs.
  • UK access. Terraced streets, parking restrictions and upper floors without lifts add crew time. Tell your remover about the UK property in detail.
  • Season. Summer is peak in both directions.

Customs: ToR1 Before the Goods Ship

Since Brexit a Spain to UK move is an import. Your remover files the declaration, but the relief that removes import VAT and duty is yours to claim.

Transfer of Residence (ToR) relief applies if you have lived outside the UK for at least 12 consecutive months, have had the goods for at least six months before you move, are making the UK your normal home, and will not sell or lend the goods for 12 months after moving. You apply online with the ToR1 form and HMRC issue a unique reference number for the import declaration (customs procedure code 40 00 C01). Apply before your goods ship: HMRC do not publish a processing time, and without the reference you may be billed VAT and duty.

The ToR1 guide covers the application in detail, including the free printable checklist.

Spanish paperwork that does double duty

HMRC want proof of your Spanish address dated within the last 6 months and proof of your UK address within the last 3 months. Before you cancel anything in Spain, keep:

  • a recent Spanish bank statement or utility bill (luz, agua, gas) in your name,
  • your certificado de empadronamiento and rental contract or escritura,
  • your NIE/TIE and passport photo page.

Your remover will also need the item list — grouped by type with quantities, no values or brands required — and will file the EU export declaration on the Spanish side.

Pets and Vehicles

Pets need a microchip, a valid rabies vaccination and an EU pet passport issued in Spain or an animal health certificate; dogs also need tapeworm treatment 1–5 days before arrival. They qualify for ToR relief and go on the application.

Cars can come in under ToR relief if listed on the ToR1, but you must notify HMRC via NOVA within 14 days of arrival and register with the DVLA. A Spanish left-hand-drive car needs headlight adjustment for UK roads and may need approval testing. Compare the cost against selling in Spain and buying in the UK.

Arriving in the UK

Spanish and other EU/EEA driving licences can be exchanged for a UK licence. If you will work, apply for a National Insurance number; register with a GP and the local council once you have an address. If you were UK tax non-resident, the Statutory Residence Test governs when residence restarts.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to move from Spain to the UK?+

Spain to UK removals run on the same road corridor as UK to Spain moves and are priced on volume. Expect roughly £1,400–£4,200 for a 1-bed and £3,500–£8,500 for a 3-bed, with the south of Spain and the islands at the top of the range and shared loads at the bottom.

Do I pay UK import VAT on furniture I bring from Spain?+

Not if HMRC approve Transfer of Residence relief before your goods arrive. You apply online with the ToR1 form, which needs proof of your Spanish address within the last 6 months and your UK address within the last 3 months, plus an item list grouped with quantities.

How long does a move from Spain to the UK take?+

A dedicated vehicle from mainland Spain typically takes 3–6 days door to door; a shared load 1–3 weeks. The Balearics and Canaries add a sea leg and can take several weeks.

Can I bring my Spanish-registered car to the UK?+

Yes, under ToR relief if you list it on the application. You must notify HMRC through NOVA within 14 days of arrival and register it with the DVLA; a left-hand-drive car will need headlight adjustment and may need approval testing. Many people sell in Spain instead.
