The Route and the Crossing
London to Madrid is roughly 1,000 miles by road, via the Channel Tunnel or a Dover ferry, then through France, over the western Pyrenees and across the Spanish plateau. A dedicated vehicle typically takes three to five days.
Some operators serving Madrid use the Portsmouth or Plymouth to Bilbao/Santander ferries instead, which cuts a long drive through France. It can suit full loads well, though sailings are less frequent.
Madrid Access
- Madrid Central / Distrito Centro. The city operates a low-emission zone restricting traffic in the centre, enforced by camera. Removal vehicles need the correct authorisation.
- Parking reservations. Reserving street space for a removal generally requires permission from the Ayuntamiento, arranged in advance.
- Small lifts, tall blocks. Central Madrid apartment buildings are often six or more storeys with lifts too small for furniture. External lifts are common.
- Summer heat. Madrid in July and August regularly exceeds 35°C. Crews work slower, and heat-sensitive items such as candles, electronics and some furniture finishes need consideration.
Saving Money on This Route
Avoid August entirely if you can. Madrid substantially empties out, many businesses close, and removal availability is poor precisely when demand from relocating families peaks. Late September through November is materially cheaper and easier to book.
Consider the northern Spain ferry route if you have a full load and flexible dates — cutting the French drive can reduce cost, though you trade away some scheduling flexibility.
