Moving from the UK to Austria

Austria is a long-ish road move — roughly 900 miles to Vienna — routed through Belgium or the Netherlands, across southern Germany and into Austria. It is a lower-volume corridor than Germany or the Netherlands, which matters more than the distance: scheduled groupage runs less often, so part-load waits can be longer than you would expect.

How Much Does It Cost to Move from the UK to Austria?

Home size Shared load Dedicated vehicle
Studio / 1-bed £1,700 – £3,400 £2,800 – £4,600
2-bed £2,400 – £4,400 £3,700 – £6,100
3-bed £3,600 – £6,800 £5,200 – £8,800
4+ bed £5,200 – £9,000 £7,200 – £11,500

Calculate the cost of moving to Austria from your property size or your own cubic-metre figure.

Transit Times

Destination Dedicated Shared load
Vienna 3–5 days 10–18 days
Linz and Upper Austria 3–5 days 10–18 days
Salzburg 3–5 days 10–18 days
Graz 4–6 days 12–20 days
Innsbruck and Tyrol 3–5 days 10–18 days

Alpine destinations can be affected by winter conditions and seasonal route restrictions, so allow more time for a December to March move into Tyrol or Vorarlberg.

Customs and Paperwork After Brexit

Austria is in the EU, so a UK to Austria move is an EU import. Used household goods normally qualify for transfer-of-residence relief from duty and Austrian VAT, provided you have owned and used them for at least six months and are genuinely relocating.

You will need a detailed valued inventory in German, proof of your Austrian address, your passport, and visa or residence documentation where applicable.

Meldezettel: Three Days, and It Is Enforced

Austria has one of Europe's tightest registration deadlines. You must register your address (Meldezettel) at a Meldeamt within three days of moving in.

That is a genuinely short window, and it is enforced. Plan for it as part of moving week rather than an errand for the following week. Registration gates the usual downstream steps — bank account, tax registration and health insurance.

Health Insurance Is Mandatory

Austria requires everyone resident to be covered, usually through the statutory system (e-card) once employed, or privately otherwise. Proof of cover is part of the residence process, so arrange it rather than assuming you can sort it after arrival.

Visas and Residency

UK citizens are now third-country nationals. Common routes are the Red-White-Red Card for skilled workers, which is points-based, the EU Blue Card, and family or student routes. Austria's system is quota-influenced and slower than some, so start the application before arranging the removal.

Vienna and Alpine Access

  • Altbau buildings. Vienna's pre-war blocks have high ceilings, long staircases and frequently no lift or a very small one. External furniture lifts are common.
  • Halteverbot permits. Reserving street space for a removal vehicle needs a permit arranged in advance through the district authority, with signage placed ahead of the day.
  • Courtyard archways. Many buildings load through an inner courtyard with a height restriction that rules out a full-size lorry.
  • Mountain access. Deliveries into Alpine villages can involve narrow, steep approaches unsuitable for a large vehicle, so a shuttle may be needed.

Pets, Vehicles and Practicalities

Pets need a microchip, valid rabies vaccination and an animal health certificate issued within 10 days of travel.

Vehicles must be registered in Austria, and NoVA (a standard fuel consumption levy) may apply on import alongside registration. Winter tyres are legally required during winter conditions, which is a genuine extra cost if you bring a car.

Saving Money on This Route

Because groupage runs less frequently to Austria, the gap between shared and dedicated transport is often narrower than on busier corridors. Price both rather than assuming a shared load is automatically better value — and if you do take groupage, book earlier than you would for Germany.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to move from the UK to Austria?+

Roughly £1,700–£4,600 for a 1-bed and £3,600–£8,800 for a 3-bed home, depending on volume and whether the load is shared or dedicated.

How long does a move from the UK to Austria take?+

Vienna, Salzburg and Innsbruck are typically 3–5 days by dedicated vehicle, with Graz 4–6. Shared loads take roughly 10–20 days, and can be longer than the distance suggests because Austria is a lower-volume corridor.

What is a Meldezettel and when must I register?+

It is Austria’s address registration, completed at a Meldeamt within three days of moving in. It is one of Europe’s tightest registration deadlines and it is enforced, so plan for it during moving week rather than the following week.

Do I pay customs duty moving household goods to Austria?+

Normally no. Austria is in the EU, and used personal effects qualify for transfer-of-residence relief from duty and Austrian VAT when you are genuinely relocating and have owned and used the goods for at least six months. A valued inventory in German is required.

Is a shared load always cheaper to Austria?+

Not by as much as elsewhere. Groupage runs less frequently to Austria than to Germany or the Netherlands, so the gap between shared and dedicated transport can be narrow. Price both, and book earlier if you take a shared load.

What visa do I need for Austria?+

Common routes are the points-based Red-White-Red Card for skilled workers, the EU Blue Card, and family or student routes. Austria’s system is quota-influenced and slower than some, so start the application before arranging the removal.

Should I take my car to Austria?+

It can be registered, but NoVA, a standard fuel consumption levy, may apply on import alongside registration costs. Winter tyres are also legally required in winter conditions, so factor that in before deciding.

Does moving to Austria in winter cause problems?+

It can for Alpine destinations. Winter conditions and seasonal route restrictions affect access into Tyrol and Vorarlberg between December and March, so allow extra time and discuss access with your remover.
