Moving from the UK to Belgium
Belgium is the closest EU destination after northern France. Brussels is around 320 miles from London, and a dedicated vehicle can complete the move in a day via the Channel Tunnel. That makes it one of the cheapest European corridors, and a popular one given the concentration of EU institutions, NATO and international employers in Brussels.

Customs and Paperwork After Brexit
A UK to Belgium move is an EU import. Used household goods are normally exempt from duty and Belgian VAT under transfer-of-residence relief when you are genuinely relocating and have owned the goods for at least six months. You will need a detailed valued inventory, proof of your Belgian address, and passport and visa where applicable.
Commune Registration and the Police Check
Within eight days of arriving you must register at your local commune (or gemeente in Flanders). What surprises people is what happens next: a local police officer visits your address to confirm you actually live there. Only after that check is completed are you entered on the register and issued a residence card.
This means you need to be reachable at the address in the weeks after registering. Missing the visit delays everything downstream.
Three Languages, Three Regions
Belgium has three official languages and the region determines which applies: Dutch in Flanders, French in Wallonia, and both in the Brussels-Capital Region. This affects your removal directly, because customs and commune paperwork is submitted in the local language.
If you are moving to Flanders, your inventory will generally need to be in Dutch; to Wallonia, in French. Confirm with your remover which they are preparing.
Brussels Specifics
Brussels flats are frequently in older buildings with narrow stairwells and small lifts, and many streets require a parking permit for a removal vehicle, arranged in advance through the commune. Your remover should handle the permit, but it needs the exact address early.
The city also has a low-emission zone covering the Brussels-Capital Region, which affects which vehicles can enter. This is the remover's responsibility, but it is worth confirming they are compliant rather than assuming.
Pets, Vehicles and Practicalities
Pets need a microchip, rabies vaccination and an animal health certificate issued within 10 days of travel. Vehicles must be registered with the DIV, and you must do so promptly after establishing residence.
A Realistic Timeline
- 3 months before — collect quotes, confirm your Belgian address and its region.
- 2 months before — book the remover, raise parking permits and the low-emission zone.
- 6 weeks before — finalise the inventory in the correct language.
- 2–4 weeks before — packing, cancel UK utilities, arrange mail redirection.
- Within 8 days of arrival — register at the commune, then wait for the police visit.
