Rural Properties and the Last Mile
Village roads in Bulgaria are often narrow, unmade or have weight limits a full-size removal truck cannot use. Many removers transfer the load to a smaller vehicle in the nearest town and charge for the extra handling. Send each company a map pin and photos of the approach, and ask whether a shuttle vehicle is included in their price.
Customs and Paperwork After Brexit
A UK to Bulgaria move is an import into the EU. Used household goods are normally free of duty and Bulgarian VAT under transfer-of-residence relief, provided you are genuinely moving your home to Bulgaria and have owned and used the goods for at least six months.
You will need a detailed valued inventory, your passport, proof of your Bulgarian address and evidence of your residence status. Bulgarian customs may ask for the inventory in Bulgarian, so ask your remover whether they arrange the translation.
The LNCh Number and Residence
The LNCh (Lichen Nomer na Chuzhdenets) is the personal number issued to foreign residents, needed for banking, utilities, tax and healthcare. It comes with your residence permit.
UK nationals arriving now are third-country nationals and usually need a long-stay visa before applying for residence through the Migration Directorate. If you were already living in Bulgaria before 2021, your rights are protected under the Withdrawal Agreement. Check the current rules with the Bulgarian embassy before booking your move.
Vehicles and Practicalities
Vehicles: Bulgaria drives on the right. A UK car must be registered locally after you become resident, and a right-hand-drive car is harder to resell.
Pets: Dogs, cats and ferrets need a microchip, a rabies vaccination and an animal health certificate issued within 10 days of travel.
