Moving from the UK to Sweden
Sweden is one of the longer European corridors. Stockholm is roughly 1,100 miles from London by road, typically routed through the Netherlands, Germany and Denmark, then over the Øresund Bridge into Malmö. Gothenburg can alternatively be reached by direct North Sea ferry, which some operators prefer for full loads.

Customs and Paperwork After Brexit
A UK to Sweden move is an EU import. Used household goods are normally exempt from duty and Swedish moms (VAT) under transfer-of-residence relief, provided you have owned and used them for at least six months and are genuinely relocating.
You will need a detailed valued inventory, proof of your Swedish address, passport and residence permit where applicable, and proof of prior ownership. Swedish customs will also want to see evidence that you have given up your UK residence.
The Personnummer
The personnummer is Sweden's personal identity number and it is the key to Swedish life. Without one you will struggle to open a bank account, get a phone contract, access healthcare or use most digital services.
You obtain it by registering with Skatteverket, the Swedish Tax Agency, after arrival. Registration generally requires that you intend to live in Sweden for at least a year and can prove your right to be there. If you are staying under a year you may instead receive a coordination number (samordningsnummer), which is more limited.
Expect a gap of several weeks between arriving and receiving your personnummer. Plan for a period where you cannot easily open accounts, and keep a UK card working in the meantime.
BankID and Digital Sweden
Sweden is close to cashless and runs on BankID, a digital identity issued through Swedish banks. Almost everything authenticates through it. You need a personnummer to get a bank account, and a bank account to get BankID, so the sequence matters: personnummer, then bank, then BankID, then normal life.
Housing and What to Ship
Swedish rentals are typically unfurnished but do usually include a kitchen with appliances, unlike Germany. The first-hand rental market in Stockholm operates on a queue system with waits measured in years, so most newcomers start with a second-hand (andrahand) sublet.
Winter matters practically. If you are moving between November and March, discuss access with your remover: snow clearance, icy driveways and short daylight hours all affect how a delivery runs.
Visas and Residency
UK citizens now need a residence permit for stays beyond 90 days. Common routes are the work permit with a Swedish employer offering terms in line with Swedish collective agreements, the EU Blue Card, self-employment permits and family routes. Apply before travelling; processing times can be long.
Pets, Vehicles and Practicalities
Pets need a microchip, valid rabies vaccination and an animal health certificate issued within 10 days of travel. Sweden previously had strict additional requirements; check the current rules with your vet.
Vehicles must be registered with Transportstyrelsen and pass a Swedish roadworthiness inspection. Winter tyres are a legal requirement during winter conditions, which is an extra cost to budget for if you bring a car.
