Customs and Paperwork After Brexit
A UK to Denmark move is an EU import. Used household goods are normally exempt from duty and Danish moms (VAT) under transfer-of-residence relief when you are genuinely relocating and have owned the goods for at least six months. You will need a detailed valued inventory, proof of your Danish address, and passport and visa where applicable.
The CPR Number
The CPR number is Denmark's civil registration number, and almost nothing works without it: a bank account, a tax card, healthcare, even a gym membership. You obtain it by registering at the Borgerservice after arrival, which requires a Danish address and, for non-EU citizens, a valid residence permit.
You will also be assigned a doctor at registration and receive a health card. Denmark's system is efficient once you are in it, but the sequencing is strict — residence permit, then address, then CPR, then everything else.
MitID and Digital Denmark
Denmark runs almost entirely on MitID, the national digital identity system. Banking, tax, healthcare, post and government services all authenticate through it. You cannot get MitID without a CPR number, and life is genuinely difficult without MitID, so treat it as a priority in your first weeks rather than an administrative afterthought.
Housing and What to Ship
Danish rental properties are usually unfurnished, and like Germany often come without light fittings. Deposits are typically three months' rent plus prepaid rent, so the up-front cost of a Danish tenancy is high — worth factoring in alongside the removal.
Copenhagen apartments are frequently in older buildings with narrow staircases and no lift. Ask your remover about hoist access if you are on an upper floor.
Visas and Residency
UK citizens now need a residence permit for stays beyond 90 days. Common routes are the Pay Limit Scheme for jobs above a salary threshold, the Fast-track Scheme through certified employers, the Positive List for occupations in shortage, and student or family routes. Apply before travelling.
Pets, Vehicles and Practicalities
Pets need a microchip, rabies vaccination and an animal health certificate issued within 10 days of travel.
Vehicles are the expensive surprise. Denmark levies a very high vehicle registration tax, and importing a car can cost more than the car is worth. Registration must normally happen within 14 days of establishing residence. Check the liability carefully before shipping a vehicle — for most people, selling in the UK is the right call.
